Nine days connect Cairo, the Mediterranean and the distinctive oasis world of Siwa without relying on a speculative cross-desert shortcut. Alexandria introduces the layered identity of a port city, while a coastal overnight breaks the approach to Siwa into more manageable stages. Three oasis days allow time for Shali, gardens and locally guided landscapes before the substantial approved-road return to Cairo. The journey is intended for travellers who value the road as part of the experience and are comfortable with long transfers. Hosting, desert outings and archaeological access are agreed with local operators, with the daily programme adjusted to season and permissions.

9 Day

A Cairo beginning

Morning: Arrive in Cairo and meet the team for a hotel transfer, allowing the first morning or afternoon to follow your actual flight and the need for rest.

Afternoon: Take a short introduction to the river or the neighbourhood if time permits. Your coordinator reviews the road stages, overnight locations and luggage arrangements for the northern journey.

Evening: Have an Egyptian dinner and leave the evening quiet, with enough time to prepare for the drive to Alexandria after breakfast.

Travel notes: Sleep in Cairo. This arrival day deliberately contains no essential ticketed visit, so a later flight does not compromise the route.

North to Alexandria’s harbour

Morning: Drive north to Alexandria with your guide, planning a rest stop and allowing time for the changing landscape between the capital and the Mediterranean coast.

Afternoon: Arrive for a fish or vegetable lunch, then follow part of the Corniche to understand the curve of the harbour and the city’s relationship with the sea.

Evening: Check into your hotel and enjoy a café pause or a short waterfront walk before dinner, choosing a sheltered option if the weather is windy.

Travel notes: Sleep in Alexandria. The road and city traffic can extend the transfer, so the day’s introduction remains flexible and archaeological interiors are reserved for tomorrow.

The many lives of Alexandria

Morning: Explore the catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa with your guide, comparing their artistic influences and the intimate scale of the underground spaces with Egypt’s better-known royal monuments.

Afternoon: Have lunch and continue to Qaitbay Citadel when open. A confirmed visit to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina can replace another stop if its schedule fits your interests.

Evening: Dine in the city and make time for a café conversation about Alexandria’s literary and commercial past, keeping the evening close to your hotel.

Travel notes: Sleep in Alexandria. Opening days and weather determine the sequence; the library is a contemporary institution with its own visiting rules and is never assumed to be open.

Along the coast to Marsa Matrouh

Morning: Leave Alexandria after breakfast for the coastal road west, with breaks and coastal outlooks chosen where access is straightforward and conditions allow a comfortable stop.

Afternoon: Reach Marsa Matrouh, have lunch and check into the agreed hotel. Spend the afternoon resting or taking a gentle seafront walk rather than extending the driving stage.

Evening: Enjoy dinner in town or at the hotel and review tomorrow’s inland route with your driver, including the planned departure and rest arrangements.

Travel notes: Sleep in Marsa Matrouh. This coastal overnight breaks the approach to Siwa; swimming is not assumed, especially in cooler or rougher conditions.

Morning: Turn inland towards Siwa on the approved road, taking the journey at the driver’s planned pace and allowing time for checkpoints, rest stops and the long desert views.

Afternoon: Arrive in the oasis for lunch and lodge check-in. Meet your local guide for an easy introduction to the town and the earthen silhouette of Shali.

Evening: Dine on locally prepared dishes featuring the oasis’s produce, then settle into a slower evening after the road journey.

Travel notes: Sleep in Siwa. Route permissions and local arrangements are confirmed before departure; this is a paved-road journey with no improvised desert crossing.

Shali, Aghurmi and the gardens

Morning: Walk through the accessible parts of Shali with your local guide, observing the earthen construction and the relationship between the old settlement and today’s town.

Afternoon: After lunch, visit Aghurmi and the Temple of the Oracle when accessible, then pause among palm or olive gardens through a pre-arranged local introduction.

Evening: Enjoy an unhurried lodge dinner and a conversation about Siwi language, agriculture and the changing life of the oasis, guided by your hosts’ interests.

Travel notes: Sleep in Siwa. Garden visits require permission, and the programme respects residential privacy rather than treating everyday life as an attraction available on demand.

Lakes and the edge of the dunes

Morning: Set out with the local specialist team for a permitted landscape excursion, selecting lake viewpoints and desert approaches according to current access and the season.

Afternoon: Have a picnic or a locally arranged lunch, followed by rest. A salt-lake stop is optional and chosen for practical conditions, with no health claims attached to the experience.

Evening: Return to the lodge before dinner and enjoy the quiet oasis evening, with time to pack carefully for the long return journey the next day.

Travel notes: Sleep in Siwa. Dune driving requires the correct operator and permissions; if unavailable, spend the day on an oasis-based route agreed with your guide.

The long road back to Cairo

Morning: Depart early on the approved route back towards Cairo, with the driver setting a schedule that includes proper rest and meal stops rather than a rushed nonstop transfer.

Afternoon: Continue through the planned road stages, pausing for lunch and comfort breaks. The day is dedicated to travel and does not include a promised archaeological visit.

Evening: Reach Cairo and check into your hotel for dinner and rest, leaving all optional city activities for another occasion after the lengthy road journey.

Travel notes: Sleep in Cairo. This is a substantial driving day; the operator confirms routing, driver arrangements and whether an additional overnight is necessary for your specific group.

Cairo departure

Morning: Have breakfast and enjoy a gentle start after yesterday’s transfer. A short nearby walk is possible only if the flight leaves enough margin.

Afternoon: Collect luggage and transfer to the airport with time for traffic and check-in, taking lunch before departure or a packed option according to your schedule.

Evening: Continue onward from Cairo, with the final day shaped around departure rather than another long excursion beyond the city.

Travel notes: The programme ends at Cairo airport. An early flight means a direct transfer; additional sightseeing is never allowed to compress the required airport margin.
