The Classical Nile by Land

Follow the Nile south from Luxor to Aswan over five days, giving the great temple landscapes room to tell different stories. This is an overland journey with a river outlook, suited to travellers who want flexible mornings and hotels on land. Explore Karnak and the Theban west bank before tracing the river through Edfu and Kom Ombo. In Aswan, the granite landscape and the island approach to Philae offer a distinct final chapter. Private driving stages include rest stops and time for meals, with the daily order adjusted to local access and the light rather than an inflexible cruise timetable.

5 Day

Luxor and the temple city

Morning: Arrive in Luxor and meet your guide for the transfer to your hotel. When arrival time permits, begin with the scale and ceremonial layout of Karnak.

Afternoon: Share lunch near the river, then rest before a shorter visit to Luxor Temple, comparing its urban setting with the larger precinct explored earlier.

Evening: Dine beside the Nile and review the next morning’s west-bank departure with your guide, leaving room for sleep after your arrival.

Travel notes: Sleep in Luxor. A later flight means Karnak moves to the second day; temple visits depend on confirmed opening hours and the group’s pace.

Royal tombs and the western cliffs

Morning: Cross to the west bank early for a carefully chosen selection of open tombs in the Valley of the Kings, with explanations outside before entering the decorated chambers.

Afternoon: Visit the terraces of Hatshepsut’s temple and pause for lunch near the agricultural edge. Return to your hotel for a break during the warmest part of the day.

Evening: Spend the evening at leisure on the east bank, with dinner focused on Egyptian vegetables, breads and a main dish chosen to suit your preferences.

Travel notes: Sleep in Luxor. Tomb selection follows the day’s ticketing and conservation rules; special tomb tickets are arranged only when confirmed in your proposal.

South through Esna to Edfu

Morning: Leave Luxor by private vehicle, following the cultivated river corridor towards Esna. Stop to understand the town and its temple setting when access permits.

Afternoon: Continue after lunch to Edfu, where the temple of Horus offers a remarkably legible sequence from monumental entrance to inner spaces explained by your guide.

Evening: Settle into the pre-arranged Edfu-area stay and have a simple dinner. This evening is deliberately quiet between two days of temple visits and road travel.

Travel notes: Sleep near Edfu, with accommodation confirmed before travel. Road conditions, checkpoints and site opening times set the pace; breaks are included in the transfer plan.

Kom Ombo and the approach to Aswan

Morning: Drive south after breakfast to Kom Ombo. Explore the temple’s paired arrangement and riverside position, with time to examine reliefs rather than only the facade.

Afternoon: Lunch along the route precedes the final drive into Aswan. Check in and enjoy the change of landscape as granite islands replace the broader northern river views.

Evening: Take an easy waterfront walk before dinner. Your guide can introduce Nubian history in preparation for tomorrow without turning the evening into another formal visit.

Travel notes: Sleep in Aswan. The transfer includes planned stops and a flexible lunch; any additional museum visit at Kom Ombo depends on its actual opening.

Philae and the granite river

Morning: Travel to the boat landing for Philae and approach the island by motorboat. Explore the temple precinct with your guide and discuss its relocation.

Afternoon: Return for lunch and, if your flight allows, visit the unfinished obelisk or enjoy a final river outlook before collecting luggage at the hotel.

Evening: Transfer to Aswan airport for your onward journey, with a packed meal or an early dinner arranged around the confirmed departure rather than a promised sunset excursion.

Travel notes: The programme ends in Aswan. Flight times determine the final visits, and boat transfers follow local conditions and the landing arrangements in operation.
