Egypt, an Archaeologist’s Journey

Twelve days trace a broad archaeological story from the Mediterranean to the temples of Nubia. Begin in Alexandria, continue to Cairo’s pyramid landscapes, then fly to Luxor for royal tombs and excursions to Dendera and Abydos on separate days. The route south pauses at Edfu before reaching Aswan and Abu Simbel. This is a substantial journey for travellers who enjoy close interpretation and are comfortable with several longer road stages. Each day balances major sites with meals and real recovery time, while access to individual tombs and temple spaces remains subject to current arrangements. Finish in Aswan rather than assuming an unconfirmed international connection.

12 Day

Arrival in Alexandria

Morning: Arrive in Alexandria or meet the team at the agreed local starting point, then transfer to your hotel with time to recover from the journey.

Afternoon: Take a gentle harbour introduction if arrival allows. Your guide sets out the archaeological themes that will connect the Mediterranean city with the Nile landscapes farther south.

Evening: Enjoy a coastal dinner and an easy evening, with no major ticketed visit scheduled until the following full morning.

Travel notes: Sleep in Alexandria. Arrival airport and transfer details are specified in the final proposal; an arrival through Cairo requires a separately confirmed overland stage.

Alexandria below and above the streets

Morning: Visit Kom el-Shoqafa’s catacombs with your guide and look at how different visual traditions meet in the funerary spaces, using the visit to question simple historical divisions.

Afternoon: After lunch, explore Kom el-Dikka when open, then consider the modern harbour from the Corniche, linking urban archaeology with the city’s continuing life.

Evening: Dine in Alexandria and pause at a café to discuss the day, leaving enough rest before tomorrow’s move to Cairo.

Travel notes: Sleep in Alexandria. The sequence follows actual openings and underground access conditions; alternative city archaeology is selected if an individual site is unavailable.

From the port to Cairo

Morning: Travel to Cairo by the agreed road transfer, allowing for a rest stop and the capital’s traffic rather than promising a precise arrival hour.

Afternoon: Check in and have lunch, then take an introductory walk in a manageable part of Historic Cairo to connect the ancient programme with the city’s later architecture.

Evening: Have dinner near the hotel and discuss the pyramid sites with your Egyptologist, preparing questions for the full day at Giza.

Travel notes: Sleep in Cairo. The walk depends on arrival time and energy; it can become a shorter local introduction without affecting the essential archaeological days.

The Giza royal landscape

Morning: Spend the morning at Giza with your Egyptologist, following the spatial relationships between pyramids, associated temples and the Sphinx while examining how royal memory was organised.

Afternoon: Have lunch and choose a confirmed museum collection or return for rest. The guide can use objects and plans to deepen the morning’s interpretation without adding another long drive.

Evening: Dine in Cairo and keep the evening free, with time to review photographs and the next day’s earlier pyramid experiments.

Travel notes: Sleep in Cairo. Interior entry is separate and ticket-dependent; the day is designed around a detailed exterior interpretation rather than guaranteed access to any chamber.

Saqqara and Dahshur’s experiments

Morning: Travel to Saqqara to explore the Step Pyramid complex and accessible surrounding monuments, asking how forms of royal burial and ceremonial enclosure changed over time.

Afternoon: After a planned lunch, continue to Dahshur for the Bent and Red Pyramid landscapes, selecting the visits and viewpoints that suit the group and current access.

Evening: Return to Cairo for dinner and a quiet evening before the domestic flight south, keeping packing and airport arrangements straightforward.

Travel notes: Sleep in Cairo. This is a full road-and-site day; interior pyramid access is optional and confirmed separately, with time and temperature determining the final sequence.

Luxor and the sacred city

Morning: Fly to Luxor on the confirmed service and meet the local team for the hotel transfer, with lunch and check-in arranged around the actual arrival.

Afternoon: Begin at Karnak if the flight permits, following the complex’s successive building phases and the way its axes relate to the wider Theban landscape.

Evening: Dine beside the Nile and discuss the west-bank tomb visits planned for tomorrow, leaving time to rest after the transfer.

Travel notes: Sleep in Luxor. A later flight shifts Karnak into available time elsewhere in the stay; the programme does not compress a major visit into an unsuitable short interval.

Royal tombs and the people who made them

Morning: Explore a selected group of open tombs in the Valley of the Kings, using your guide’s introduction to understand the imagery before entering each chamber.

Afternoon: Have lunch and visit Deir el-Medina when accessible, turning from royal narratives to the settlement of the skilled workers who created the tombs.

Evening: Return to the hotel and have dinner, with a free evening to recover before the excursions north of Luxor.

Travel notes: Sleep in Luxor. Individual tombs, photography and ticket supplements follow current rules; the guide selects a coherent sequence without promising restricted or closed spaces.

Dendera, a temple read in detail

Morning: Drive north to Dendera with your Egyptologist and devote the morning to the temple of Hathor, considering its courts, columned spaces and carved decoration in sequence.

Afternoon: Pause for lunch and continue only into areas that are open and suitable for the group, then return to Luxor with a rest stop as needed.

Evening: Enjoy dinner on the Nile and an unhurried evening, leaving tomorrow’s longer Abydos excursion as a separate day with its own attention.

Travel notes: Sleep in Luxor. Roof, crypt and other special-area access is not assumed; the day remains valuable through careful interpretation of the spaces actually open.

Abydos and the memory of kings

Rijksmuseum · CC0 · Photograph cropped and resized

Morning: Depart for Abydos on the approved road route, allowing for checkpoints and a break before reaching the temple associated with Seti I.

Afternoon: Explore the accessible reliefs and architectural sequence with your guide, then have a planned lunch before the substantial return drive to Luxor.

Evening: Dine at the hotel and rest, keeping the evening short after a full day of travel and close archaeological observation.

Travel notes: Sleep in Luxor. The operator confirms current road and site arrangements; any nearby additional monument is considered only if access and time permit.

Edfu on the journey to Aswan

Hedwig Storch · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Photograph cropped and resized

Morning: Leave Luxor for Aswan by private vehicle, stopping at Edfu for a guided visit focused on the temple’s ceremonial route and unusually legible architectural layout.

Afternoon: Have lunch along the agreed route and continue south with a comfort break, reaching Aswan in time to settle into the hotel rather than add a second major temple.

Evening: Enjoy dinner and a first view of the granite river landscape, then prepare for an early, carefully organised Abu Simbel excursion.

Travel notes: Sleep in Aswan. This is a long transfer with a substantial visit; the driver and guide confirm the route and stop schedule in advance.

Abu Simbel and the saved temples

Morning: Depart on the approved route to Abu Simbel with a planned rest stop, reaching the site for a guided visit to the great temple and the neighbouring sanctuary.

Afternoon: Have lunch or the arranged packed meal, then return to Aswan by road, with breaks and enough time to avoid a rushed sequence at the temples.

Evening: Dine at the hotel and rest after the long day, with tomorrow’s final island visit arranged around your onward departure.

Travel notes: Sleep in Aswan. Road permissions and departure timing are checked locally; this is a substantial round trip, and an overnight extension is available only through a revised proposal.

Philae and departure

Morning: If your onward flight permits, take the motorboat to Philae for a final guided visit, bringing together temple ritual, Nubian geography and the modern rescue campaign.

Afternoon: Return for lunch and luggage collection before the airport transfer. An early flight means Philae must be moved into another confirmed slot or the stay extended.

Evening: Continue from Aswan on the booked onward journey, with no assumption that a domestic arrival elsewhere automatically connects to an international departure.

Travel notes: The programme ends at Aswan airport. Flight timing and boat operations determine the final sequence, and all connections are specified in the quotation.
