The Grand Egyptian River Journey

Thirteen days bring together Cairo’s pyramid landscapes, Luxor’s archaeological depth and a smaller vessel’s perspective on the Nile. The journey begins with several nights in the capital before flying south for the Theban temples, royal tombs and a separate Dendera excursion. A four-night intended Dahabiya sailing then leads from the Esna area towards Aswan, combining major temple visits with time on deck and locally agreed river stops. Finish on land with Philae and an Abu Simbel excursion before departure from Aswan. The vessel, exact route, overnight locations and road arrangements are confirmed before booking, preserving the experience while allowing for wind, locks and current permissions.

13 Day

Cairo, with time to arrive

Morning: Meet the local team after arriving in Cairo and transfer to your hotel, leaving space for rest, a first meal and settling into the room.

Afternoon: If the flight schedule allows, take a short river or neighbourhood introduction with your guide and discuss the journey’s balance of land visits and sailing.

Evening: Enjoy dinner in Cairo and a quiet evening, with tomorrow’s Giza visit beginning after an early breakfast rather than an overfilled arrival day.

Travel notes: Sleep in Cairo. The introductory walk is flexible, and hotel early check-in is included only when explicitly confirmed in your proposal.

Giza and the architecture of permanence

Morning: Explore the plateau with your Egyptologist, studying the sequence of pyramids, associated monuments and the Sphinx with time to stand back and read the wider landscape.

Afternoon: Have lunch near Giza and choose a confirmed museum visit or a return to the hotel, giving the morning’s ideas time to settle rather than adding another distant site.

Evening: Dine by the Nile or close to your hotel, with a free evening and practical advice available for any independently chosen outing.

Travel notes: Sleep in Cairo. Pyramid interior tickets are separate and availability-dependent; the visit never assumes exclusive access or unrestricted photography.

Saqqara and the city’s living layers

Morning: Travel to Saqqara for an introduction to Djoser’s complex and selected accessible tombs, comparing royal architectural innovation with scenes of everyday life in the surrounding monuments.

Afternoon: After lunch, return to Cairo for a short, manageable Historic Cairo walk if traffic and energy allow, keeping the route focused rather than trying to see the entire district.

Evening: Enjoy a final Cairo dinner and prepare for tomorrow’s domestic flight, with luggage and airport timing checked by your coordinator.

Travel notes: Sleep in Cairo. Access to individual tombs and religious buildings follows current rules, and the afternoon walk is adjusted to the actual return from Saqqara.

Luxor’s east-bank beginnings

Morning: Fly to Luxor on the confirmed domestic service, meet the local guide and transfer to the hotel, with check-in and lunch fitted to arrival time.

Afternoon: Visit Luxor Temple if the schedule allows, considering the way the monument sits within the modern city and connects to the wider sacred geography of Thebes.

Evening: Have dinner beside the river and rest, reserving the royal tombs and Karnak for the following days when each can receive fuller attention.

Travel notes: Sleep in Luxor. A late flight moves the temple introduction to another available interval; no evening opening is promised without local confirmation.

Across the river to the royal valleys

Morning: Cross to the west bank early for selected open tombs in the Valley of the Kings, with your guide explaining the decoration and conservation rules before each visit.

Afternoon: Continue to Hatshepsut’s terraces and have lunch near the agricultural edge, then return to the hotel for a genuine afternoon break.

Evening: Dine on the east bank and enjoy time to read or walk beside the river, keeping the evening relaxed after the archaeological morning.

Travel notes: Sleep in Luxor. Special tomb supplements and any additional west-bank visit are agreed separately, with heat and walking pace determining the final selection.

Dendera and a quieter Nile afternoon

Morning: Take the approved road north to Dendera and explore the temple of Hathor with your Egyptologist, examining the transition between open courts and the richly decorated interior.

Afternoon: Have lunch and return to Luxor, leaving the afternoon free for rest or a short river outing if boats and conditions make it practical.

Evening: Enjoy dinner on land and discuss the upcoming sailing, including the confirmed boarding point, crew arrangements and any dietary needs for meals aboard.

Travel notes: Sleep in Luxor. Special temple areas are visited only when open; the optional river interval is flexible and does not replace the day’s main guided visit.

Karnak and boarding near Esna

Morning: Visit Karnak early, following its major axes and building phases with your guide before leaving Luxor for the confirmed embarkation point near Esna.

Afternoon: Have lunch around the transfer or after boarding, depending on the vessel’s schedule. Settle into your cabin and attend the crew’s briefing before the voyage begins.

Evening: Share the first dinner on board, watching the riverbank from the deck as the captain chooses the authorised overnight mooring.

Travel notes: Sleep aboard. The exact boarding location and first sailing stage are confirmed by the operator; wind, locks and river conditions may require tug or motor assistance.

Edfu and a river afternoon

Marc Ryckaert · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Photograph cropped and resized

Morning: Visit the temple of Horus at Edfu with your Egyptologist at the time agreed with the captain, taking a measured route through its monumental sequence.

Afternoon: Return for lunch on board and spend the afternoon watching cultivated banks and passing boats, with shade, reading time and rest built into the day.

Evening: Enjoy dinner prepared by the onboard team and a quiet mooring, with no promised shore performance or intrusive household visit.

Travel notes: Sleep aboard. The operator determines shore transport and the order of stops; site access and river conditions may move Edfu within the sailing sequence.

Quarry cliffs and village edges

Morning: If the confirmed route and permissions allow, go ashore around Gebel el-Silsila to consider the sandstone quarries and the river’s role in moving monumental building materials.

Afternoon: Have lunch on the vessel and continue at the captain’s pace. A short locally hosted visit or walk is considered only where landings and prior arrangements are appropriate.

Evening: Dine aboard and enjoy the changing light from the deck, leaving the evening free for conversation rather than another organised excursion.

Travel notes: Sleep aboard. This landing is conditional; an alternative permitted river stop is used if moorings, weather or local access make the intended visit unsuitable.

Kom Ombo and the southern landscape

Morning: Explore Kom Ombo with your guide, comparing its paired arrangement and carved scenes while keeping enough time to appreciate the riverside setting.

Afternoon: Return for lunch and continue towards Aswan, using the afternoon for rest and observation as the Nile landscape changes closer to the granite islands.

Evening: Share a final dinner on board and confirm the following day’s disembarkation, luggage transfer and meeting with the Aswan land team.

Travel notes: Sleep aboard. Navigation, moorings and shore visits follow the captain’s decisions and operator’s confirmed schedule, with no fixed sailing time promised.

Aswan and Philae on land

Morning: Disembark at the agreed landing and travel with the local team to Philae’s boat pier, approaching the temple island by the service operating that day.

Afternoon: Explore the precinct with your guide, then have lunch on land and check into the Aswan hotel, leaving time for a shower and a relaxed afternoon.

Evening: Dine in Aswan and prepare for tomorrow’s southern excursion, with departure, meals and road requirements reviewed in advance by the team.

Travel notes: Sleep in Aswan. The order follows the actual disembarkation time and boat operations; the programme preserves rest before the long Abu Simbel day.

A final monumental chapter at Abu Simbel

Diego Delso · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Photograph cropped and resized

Morning: Depart on the approved road route with your driver and guide, allowing for a break before exploring the temples of Ramesses II and Hathor and Nefertari.

Afternoon: Enjoy the arranged lunch or packed meal and return to Aswan with proper stops, discussing both the original Nubian setting and the engineering of the temples’ relocation.

Evening: Have a final dinner at the hotel and rest after the substantial road journey, keeping the last evening deliberately simple.

Travel notes: Sleep in Aswan. The operator confirms departure timing and road permissions; any sound-and-light show or overnight Abu Simbel extension requires a separately agreed route.

Farewell to the Nile

Marc Ryckaert (MJJR) · CC BY 3.0 · Photograph cropped and resized

Morning: Enjoy breakfast overlooking the river and a gentle final morning when your flight allows, with time to pack and reflect on the journey from Cairo to Nubia.

Afternoon: Collect luggage and transfer to Aswan airport, arranging lunch or a snack around the actual check-in time and the onward service confirmed in your proposal.

Evening: Continue your journey from Aswan; if departure is early, the day begins with a direct transfer and breakfast arranged accordingly.

Travel notes: The programme ends at Aswan airport. Domestic and international connections are explicitly confirmed, and no final excursion is allowed to compromise the required transfer margin.
